About the CHM O Level course

CHM O Level is NIELIT's foundation-level programme in Computer Hardware Maintenance. It trains learners to understand, assemble, install, maintain and repair computers, laptops, printers and small networks, skills that every office, school, bank and computer shop depends on.

This one-year course prepares you for the NIELIT CHM O Level programme. It starts with basic electronics and digital electronics, then moves to PC architecture, motherboards, processors, memory, storage and power supplies. You assemble and dismantle computers, set up BIOS and UEFI, install Windows and Linux with drivers, service printers and laptops, crimp and test network cables, configure routers and diagnose faults step by step. Most of the time is spent on hands-on practicals in the hardware lab at CADD centres, supported by live online classes for theory and revision.

The course leads to work as a hardware technician, desktop support engineer or networking assistant, or to your own repair and service business. The counsellor will guide you on NIELIT registration and exams.

You will be able to

  • Use a multimeter, identify electronic components and do basic soldering
  • Explain logic gates, number systems and digital circuits used in computers
  • Identify, test and replace motherboard, processor, RAM, storage and SMPS
  • Assemble a PC, configure BIOS or UEFI and install operating systems and drivers
  • Maintain and repair printers, monitors and laptops
  • Set up a small LAN with cabling, switches and Wi-Fi routers
  • Diagnose and fix common hardware and software faults systematically

Who it is for

  • Students after Class 10 or 12 interested in hardware and repair work
  • ITI and diploma students in electronics or IT
  • Computer shop staff and technicians who want a formal qualification
  • Youth planning their own computer sales and service business

What you need

  • Eligibility as per current NIELIT CHM O Level rules; the counsellor will confirm
  • Interest in electronics and working with tools
  • Practical sessions need attendance at the CADD centre hardware lab
